Located on St Patrick Square, Kalpna is almost certainly Edinburgh’s most well known vegetarian Indian. A family-run venture, it has been going strong for decades. Punjabi, Gujurati and South Indian dishes are the mainstay of the menu. The thali combo trays and lunchtime buffets are deservedly popular. The signature dish is the dam aloo Kashmeri – potato barrels filled with mixed vegetables, paneer and nuts served in a combination of a fresh tomato, honey and ginger sauce plus a creamy almond and saffron sauce.

House specialities include the mangsho roti – a hot and spicy lamb dish flavoured with, among others, garlic, ginger, chillies, bay leaves and coriander.

The lunchtime buffet is always popular and the a la carte offers lots of familiar and much loved options. As might be expected from a restaurant called The Clay Oven, dishes cooked in the tandoor take pride of place on the menu. Vegetarians are well catered for and there are several menus including business lunches and a Sunday buffet to deal with most dining occasions.

Voujon on Newington Road is a smartly turned out Indian restaurant which has been pleasing its regular customers since 2005. Naturally, there is the full range of bhunas, madras and dansak curries which have long been favourites with fans of Indian food. With prior notice, Voujon can also offer spectacular dishes for special occasions. Designed for four, the kulji lamb is a whole leg of lamb which has been butterflied, marinated in herbs and then barbecued.
